Remedial Massage
Uses several specialised techniques to locate and repair damage and to support and speed up the body's own repair mechanisms. The massage is applied directly to the skin using a lubricating medium, usually oil, which ensures that the muscles associated with the disorder are deeply penetrated increasing mobilisation. Passive stretching moves may also used.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue Massage, as its name says, focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It is designed to reach the deep sections of thick muscles, specifically the individual muscle fibres. It is both corrective and therapeutic. It is beneficial for many physical problems, including sports injuries and chronic pain. Because it works very deeply, emotional issues can also be addressed, when these have been stored in the body.
Sports Massage
Sports massage is designed to prevent and relieve injuries and conditions that are associated with exercise. It can often be quite strenuous and is meant to relieve and reduce the stress and tension that can build up within the body’s soft tissues while exercising. It can be carried out before, during, or after playing sport or exercising and uses techniques that are designed to increase endurance and performance, to minimise the chances of injury and if there is an injury, to reduce the recovery time.
Relaxation
Swedish massage is a system of long strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration and shaking motions that apply pressure between muscles and bones, rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. Swedish massage feels good, is relaxing and invigorating.
Lymphatic Drainage For Immune Support
This specialised massage technique can be used to cleanse the body fluid system - the Lymphatic System - as a means of fighting off winter germs. The lymphatic system is part of the circulatory system and is made up of a delicate network of lymphatic vessels all over the body that drain and help to cleanse the body of toxic waste products. A poorly functioning system can leave you more susceptible to circulating micro-organisms and therefore more susceptible to “catch a cold”. Lymphatic drainage massage assists the movement of lymph through a series of light, rhythmic techniques in a specialised order starting at the collar bone to first clear the lymph pathways and then move the lymph through the system.
Other conditions that can be assisted by Lymphatic Drainage Massage are swollen tissue after accidents, fluid retention, migraine and sinus headaches caused by congestion.
Massage FAQs
1. What is massage?
Massage is the systematic and scientific manipulation of the soft tissues of the body and is performed directly on the skin in a methodical manner for therapeutic purposes. (Massage & Myotherapy by Brian Tritton1996)
2. Does it matter when I get a massage?
Any time is a great time for a massage! You do not need to wait until you're injured or stressed. Indeed, massage is extremely effective as a preventative maintenance for your body and mind. So there is no need to wait until your headache starts to pound or your back hurts from overwork or stress. A regular massage can be a great way to deal with stress and prevent it from causing pain or discomfort.
3. What are the benefits of massage?
Most people would agree a massage makes them feel good. But many probably don't realise exactly how good a regular massage is for their overall health. Massage can improve performance, aid recovery, prevent and eliminate injuries, reduce stress and even enhance metabolism and circulation. With so many alternative health treatments available it's little wonder people get confused about where to go when they're not feeling the best. But, while new health therapies continue to emerge, think about this…the Chinese began using massage to heal the human body as long ago as 5,000BC and it's still being used today.
4. Will I be sore after a massage?
You may be a little sore for a day or two after a massage. This will depend on the state of your muscles and the intensity of the massage. Drinking water, having a light stretch or bath with epsom salts may aid in the recovery.
5. Who shouldn’t have massage?
Generally the guidelines are straightforward - the massage therapist does not want to make any underlying medical condition worse and you don't want to pass anything contagious to your therapist. If you are unsure then please check with your doctor before commencing massage therapy. There are some contraindications for receiving a massage. These include:
-
Fever
-
Any infectious disease
-
Systemic infections
-
Severe Cold/Flu
-
Fracture, bleeding, burns
-
Acute injuries
-
